Support for Landlords to Reach Minimum EPC Requirements
Posted by Hannah Leigh
At last week’s Labour Party conference, Ed Miliband officially announced plans to ban landlords from renting out properties with an EPC rating below C by 2030. This marks a reversal of the previous government’s U-turn last September, signalling a renewed focus on stricter energy efficiency standards. Detailed proposals are expected before the year’s end.
Support for Landlords
In a positive move, Labour’s plan includes financial support to help landlords comply with the new standards. Grants ranging from £15,000 to £30,000 will be available, depending on the required upgrades. These could cover improvements such as insulation, solar panels, and air source heat pumps. Portfolio landlords, however, will need to contribute 50% of the costs for any additional properties.
The grants will be offered through the re-launched Warm Homes: Local Grant scheme but will only be available in specific “eligible postcodes,” covering roughly half of the UK. The total funding for local authorities to administer the scheme is currently under review and will be confirmed at a later date.
